Road intersection – Via Militaris

Archaeological research in the territory of the municipality of Dimitrovgrad shows that life in this region was intensively developed in ancient times.

The settlement at the time was one of the stations of the “Mansiones” resting place and the “Mutationes” horse change station. These stations were located every 20 km on the old Via Militaris military route. In ancient times Dimitrovgrad was called “Balanstra”.

Today, the E75 and the Belgrade-Istanbul railway pass through Ponišavlje. For the most part, they completely follow the direction of the former “VIA MILITARIS” – the road from Singidunum to Byzantium.

The location of the Goyndol kale was a strategically important place from which much of the road from Dimitrovgrad to Pirot was controlled.
